Overview
Meet the engine, its interfaces, and the path to your first task.
Your agent, on your machine
zengine is a configurable agent engine. The executable is named zagent. Download a compiled build, connect a model provider, and give it a task in a workspace.
The same engine supports three interfaces: headless commands, an interactive terminal, and a browser UI served locally. Named sessions preserve conversation history and attachments between runs.
Start here
- Download a build for your operating system and processor.
- Install and configure the agent home.
- Run your first task with a model you can access.
- Customize its behavior with prompts, memory, skills, and slash commands.
- Add a tool when your workflow needs a new capability.

Current release status
v0.1.1 is a development preview. Use it for supervised evaluation in isolated, non-sensitive environments. It is not presented as a production-ready system for unattended client operations. Read security and limitations before enabling tools or providing data.
The engine is distributed as compiled builds. You do not need Go or access to the engine source to run or customize it. External tools may require their own runtime, such as Python or Node.js.
What runs where
The engine, its home files, and the bundled UI run on your machine. Requests send prompt content, tool results, and supported attachments to the model endpoint you configure. A local endpoint can keep model inference on your infrastructure; external tools may contact their own services.
